Here we see a kind of reverse mirror-image of the previous hexagram, with thunder  above and the gentle wind below. The image here is of rolling thunder and blowing wind, apparently the very antithesis of duration. Yet this is the paradox that you must understand. If you think of duration as meaning a stand-still, a kind of grim hanging on, this can lead only to stagnation and eventual death. But the ancient Chinese saw duration as being a very dynamic quality; the concept of change, as a universal law, requires one to cope with the constantly shifting sands of life with forethought, dignity and understanding. Conservatism and traditionalism are also inherent in this hexagram, in that the best way to handle changes in life is through the experience of traditional values. You need to have flexibility and strength to accommodate change without sustaining structural damage.

The central strong line is held in check by two weak lines above and below, signifying a difficult moment. The image contained in this hexagram is of a gorge through which water, symbolizing energy, must flow. Clearly, you are in hazardous circumstances. This situation will require all the resolve you can muster, and dictates that you deal with your affairs in an upright and honest way. This is not the time to try to slide around any challenges - you must face them head on. Nor is it the time to be aggressive; instead, maintain a genuinely strong and steady approach. These moments, if dealt with correctly, can be very character-building, so there is every chance that some good may come of them.

The ancient Chinese saw this hexagram as representing a wooden beam, so seriously weakened that, unless immediate action was taken, it would simply collapse under its own weight. The implication, therefore, is that the focus of your thoughts is in a dire state and you must do something about it urgently. It is as if you are at the middle of a vortex which is bringing all the troubles and inherent weaknesses of the present situation to the fore. If you fail to make radical and essential changes immediately, everything will disintegrate. Stand firm and be very clear about which direction you want to take. Gather together all your inner strengths; keep a clear head, and you will be able to weather the inevitable storm.

The essence of this hexagram, therefore, has much to do with contemplation. It is a time likened to autumn, when you can take stock of your situation. Take this chance to examine your own values and make any changes you think necessary in the light of new experience. There is a fine balance between the needs of the individual in society and those of the collective whole. This hexagram indicates that now is the time to see your personal needs in terms of those around you. You have a good opportunity to involve yourself in projects that benefit a large number of people. This might mean anything from running a soup-kitchen to paying more heed to the people you live and work with. If you recognize the talents of others and do not demand either more or less than they can give, they can gain greater fulfillment.

Nature is a great leveller, yet it supports an enormous number of creatures in a delicate and interwoven mesh. The message of Ch'ien is that the only way to approach life successfully is with modesty and moderation, and this is especially true now. In business, personal affairs, social situations or any other area of life, it is essential that you avoid any extremes in how you behave or think - or you may lose control of the situation. Steer away from greed and selfishness and treat those who have less than you with sympathy. This is not the time for grand plans, but instead, temper everything you do with gentleness and understanding.
