57 - Five Seven (Octal)
57 T'ung Jen
FELLOWSHIP
This hexagram is composed of heaven at the top and fire below - two complementary ideals moving in the same direction. The lines are all strong, with the exception of the yielding line in the second place, which signifies that a number of strong people can work together constructively if they co-operate and collaborate. There is a fine balance between the needs of the individual in society and those of the collective whole. This hexagram indicates that now is the time to see your personal needs in terms of those around you. You have a good opportunity to involve yourself in projects that benefit a large number of people. This might mean anything from running a soup-kitchen to paying more heed to the people you live and work with. If you recognize the talents of others and do not demand either more or less than they can give, they can gain greater fulfillment.
LINE OF CHANGE
NINE at the BOTTOM
You are joining together with a number of people with similar aims and ideals. At this stage, it is important that all dealings are totally out in the open so there are no hidden agendas which might lead to misunderstandings later on.
SIX in the SECOND PLACE
After a period of time, the group is tending to close ranks, becoming elitist and factious. This process is shallow and small-minded and will only serve to separate the group from others who may have much to offer.
NINE in the THIRD PLACE
Anyone in the group who is secretly pursuing their own agenda will eventually cause a great deal of mistrust and conflict. A group can only survive if everyone has the same goals in mind.
NINE in the FOURTH PLACE
Sometimes, in order to appreciate the worth of a group of people, you must go through a stage of disillusionment and strike out on your own. At this point, arguments ensue and you are forced to recognize the value of the group.
NINE in the FIFTH PLACE
This is a time of difficulty, of obstacles and possibly of disagreement - even separation. However, if the innermost motives of all of you are on the same wavelength, unity and harmony can be restored.
NINE at the TOP
The warmth and closeness of the situation has ebbed away and all that is left is a union of mutual convenience. Impersonal pragmatism has taken over where once everyone had a common goal.
